ANALYSIS: Ball State is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 281st overall (out of 364) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 14-17. Of the 12 schools in the MAC (average ranking 226.5), they're currently ranked as our #10 team in the conference.
Defense is not exactly a strength for Ball State this year. The team is ranked 299th in defensive efficiency and allows more than 114 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Ball State is extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #359 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 7.56 vs. AO. Ball State also fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked tenth from the bottom in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 65.5% of their attempts from close-up. Ball State lastly performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 349th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 43.4% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Ball State still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #236 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Ball State is one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 316th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 84.19 vs. AO. If Ball State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 32.16 vs. AO, which ranks 34th in the country.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Ball State often performs worse than normal. Ball State is more efficient than usual 23% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.31. In their other contests, Ball State performs better than the norm 60% of the time.
Ball State does better vs. clubs that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 85.64, Ball State performs above average 56% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 20% of the time.
Ball State performs worse against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.17%, Ball State is more efficient than normal 32% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 67% of the time.
