ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Ball State should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. They have a record of 14-17 and are ranked 293rd overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 12) in the MAC (average ranking 231.4).
Defense is not exactly a strength for Ball State this year. The team is ranked 314th in defensive efficiency and allows more than 108 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Ball State performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 341st nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 43.0% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Ball State also does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 335th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 36.7% of their attempts from afar. And to expose that weakness, AO will gladly launch the three all day and all night. Of AO's total field goals, a large chunk of them (40.6%) will be from long-distance.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Ball State still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 97 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #259 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Ball State happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked sixth from the bottom in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 78.99 vs. AO. Ball State also won't provide opponents much of a scare with their shooting percentage from the inside. The team is ranked 327th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 52.9% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. If Ball State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 29.05 vs. AO, which ranks 26th in the country.
On the road, Ball State performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 340th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Ball State performs better against squads that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 86.22, Ball State is more efficient than normal 90% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 35% of the time.
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Ball State usually performs worse than average. Ball State is more efficient than normal 37% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 22.72. In all other contests, Ball State performs better than average 82% of the time.
Ball State is typically better vs. teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.86%, Ball State performs above their norm 68% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
