ANALYSIS: Ohio State is one of the teams in the upper echelon of college basketball this year. Ranked 11th overall (out of 357) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 21-10. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 44.1). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.805 (the 14th-highest in the country), Ohio State has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Ohio State will create problems for opponents with their extremely prolific offense. Scoring roughly 118 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the squad is rated #4 in offensive efficiency. Ohio State is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. Though they're most successful shooting the mid-range jumper (46.9% vs. AO, fifth in the country), the team also makes 37.9% of their three-pointers (24th), 66.3% of their near-proximity chances (12th), and 49.3% of their total shots from the field (13th) vs. AO. Ohio State also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 31.65 vs. AO, they are ranked sixth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. In addition, the team is in the top-50 in free throw shooting, converting a solid 76.2% of their attempts. Ohio State lastly allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 7.97, which ranks #21 in the country.
Ohio State is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 88th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 96 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Ohio State does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked first in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 29.6% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (32.5%) will be from mid-range. Ohio State is also one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #20 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.3% of their total attempts from the floor. If Ohio State does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 85.26 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 47th-worst in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Ohio State is typically worse vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 21.63, Ohio State performs above their norm 29% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 70% of the time.
When facing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Ohio State often performs worse than normal. Ohio State is more efficient than usual 30% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.09%. In their other contests, Ohio State performs better than the norm 64% of the time.
