ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Alabama State should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. They have a record of 8-24 and are ranked 342nd overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 10) in the SWAC (average ranking 313.5).
Alabama State has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank sixth from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 84 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Alabama State has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 62.2% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #348 overall in free throw percentage. Alabama State also shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They only convert 29.3% of their three-pointers (331st in the nation), 50.3% of their near-proximity attempts (343rd), and 37.6% of their total shots from the field (seventh from the bottom) vs. AO.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Alabama State still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 103 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #257 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Alabama State has done a pretty poor job this season to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. The team is ranked 326th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 65.0% of their attempts from close-up. Alabama State also allows opponents' field goal percentages to get far too high. The ball-club ranks #315 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 46.8% of their total attempts from the floor. If Alabama State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to limit the number of shot attempts by the opposition. The team has a defensive field goal attempt rate of 78.46 vs. AO, which ranks 48th-best in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Alabama State does worse vs. clubs that prefer the outside shot. When playing squads that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.00, Alabama State performs above average 39% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 79% of the time.
Alabama State performs better against squads that effectively clean the offensive glass. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.61, Alabama State is more efficient than normal 90% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 50% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Alabama State usually performs worse than average. Alabama State is more efficient than normal 47% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.05%. In all other contests, Alabama State performs better than average 85% of the time.
