ANALYSIS: There are very few Division I teams that are as bad as Alabama A&M is this year. They have a record of 6-9 and are ranked tenth from the bottom overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #7 team (out of 10) in the SWAC (average ranking 325.0). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.162 (which ranks 346th in the nation), Alabama A&M has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Alabama A&M has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank sixth from the bottom in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 83 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Alabama A&M shoots dreadfully from the floor and ranks in the bottom-25 in three of our four major field goal shooting categories. They only convert 27.6% of their three-pointers (fifth from the bottom in the nation), 51.5% of their near-proximity attempts (344th), and 37.6% of their total shots from the field (fifth from the bottom) vs. AO. Alabama A&M also does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 19.95 vs. AO, they are 341st in the overall rankings for that category. Alabama A&M lastly has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 64.0% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #337 overall in free throw percentage.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Alabama A&M still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 104 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #252 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Alabama A&M fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 30.29 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #341 in the country in that category. Alabama A&M also does a pretty inadequate job to provide chances for themselves to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #325 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 8.11 vs. AO. If Alabama A&M does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to prevent opponents from draining shot attempts in between the three-point line and the low post. AO will convert just 32.9% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the team is nationally ranked 21st-best in that category as a result.
On the road, Alabama A&M performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 342nd in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
