ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Arkansas has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They are ranked #49 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 20-12. They are also ranked by this site as the #6 team (out of 14) in the SEC (average ranking 66.1).
Arkansas has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #37 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 108 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Arkansas does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 33.04 vs. AO, they are ranked third in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. In addition, the team is in the top-100 in free throw shooting, converting a solid 73.7% of their attempts. Arkansas also allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 7.93, which ranks #10 in the country. Arkansas is lastly one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 16th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 66.6% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. If Arkansas does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 10.16 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 46th-worst in college hoops.
Arkansas plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 62nd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 93 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Arkansas does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 22nd in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 29.9% of their attempts from afar. Arkansas has also been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 34th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.2% of their attempts from that distance.
On the road, Arkansas performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 333rd in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Arkansas does worse vs. clubs that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.74, Arkansas performs above average 20% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 68% of the time.
Arkansas performs better against squads that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 58.36%, Arkansas is more efficient than normal 79% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 33% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Arkansas usually performs worse than average. Arkansas is more efficient than normal 27% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.31. In all other contests, Arkansas performs better than average 67% of the time.
