ANALYSIS: A top-25 caliber adversary, Rutgers will likely be a stiff test for any team in Division I. Haslametrics has them ranked 24th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 20-11. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.9), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
The Rutgers defense will be extremely problematic for most opposing offenses. Allowing about 87 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the club is ranked sixth overall in defensive efficiency. Rutgers will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. Though they're most successful defending the mid-range jumper (allowing 28.9% shooting in that category vs. AO, third in the country), the team also hassles AO into converting just 30.1% of their three-pointers (25th), 53.7% of their near-proximity chances (34th), and 37.4% of their total shots from the field (sixth). Rutgers also makes a point to avoid fouls and prevent opponents from getting to the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.20 vs. AO, they are currently rated 58th in the country in that category.
Rutgers is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 65th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 105 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Rutgers appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 17.49 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 12th in the NCAA), and they convert 6.8% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 34th) as well. Rutgers also allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.31, which ranks #16 in the country. Rutgers will lastly routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 20th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. As far as converting those near-proximity shots goes, the team shoots 60.9% vs. AO, which falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of the rankings in that category. If Rutgers does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 63.0% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 13th-worst in Division I.
When playing on the road, Rutgers performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 328th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert well from the charity stripe, Rutgers often performs worse than normal. Rutgers is more efficient than usual 33% of the time when facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.70%. In their other contests, Rutgers performs better than the norm 83% of the time.
Rutgers does better vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.19%, Rutgers performs above average 72% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
Rutgers performs better against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 11.31, Rutgers is more efficient than normal 82% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 37% of the time.
