ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, North Dakota is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Carrying a record of 15-18, they are currently rated #211 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of nine) in the Summit League (average ranking 203.3).
Based on the data, North Dakota will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 99 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #168 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. North Dakota is superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 21st nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 41.7% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. However, even with their high conversion rate on mid-range attempts, this team usually settles for shots from other spots on the floor. Only about 23.7% of their overall attempts vs. AO are from those in-between locations. North Dakota also converts a fair amount of its free throws. Making 74.9% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 59th nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-75 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 28.40 vs. AO. If North Dakota does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 78.18 vs. AO, which ranks 36th-worst in college basketball.
The defense for North Dakota, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the offense is. The team is ranked 282nd in defensive efficiency, allowing about 104 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. North Dakota tends to struggle a bit against teams that shoot the three. They rank 295th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 35.7% of their attempts from afar. Luckily, AO will take nowhere near as many threes as they typically would, and only 32.1% of AO's field goal attempts will come from downtown.
North Dakota is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 31st in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that convert well from outside the arc, North Dakota often performs worse than normal. North Dakota is more efficient than usual 30% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.40%. In their other contests, North Dakota performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
North Dakota does worse vs. clubs that convert well from the charity stripe. When playing squads that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.69%, North Dakota performs above average 33% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
North Dakota performs worse against squads that are typically efficient on offense. When facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 99.25, North Dakota is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 60% of the time.
