ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, ECU is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Ranked 219th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 11-20. Of the 12 schools in the AAC (average ranking 94.4), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
ECU sports an offensive attack that is mediocre at best. Rated at #215 in offensive efficiency, they score about 97 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. ECU is one of the least accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They are ranked 333rd in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 29.2% of their attempts from long vs. AO. If ECU does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 40.5% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 43rd in the NCAA.
ECU doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 100 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #182 in the nation in defensive efficiency. ECU has some difficulty staying out of foul trouble, leading to an excess of free throw attempts for the opposition. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 29.18 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #297 in the country in that category.
ECU is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 44th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
ECU performs worse against squads that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.85, ECU is more efficient than normal 31% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, ECU usually performs better than average. ECU is more efficient than normal 80% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 12.35. In all other contests, ECU performs better than average 38% of the time.
