ANALYSIS: There aren't many teams in the country that have been as strong as Michigan this year. They have a record of 23-5 and are ranked third overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 44.1).
Michigan is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked fourth in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 88 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Michigan will wreak havoc with many opponents' shooting percentages this year. And it doesn't really matter where the shots originate; the team ranks in the top-25 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. They allow AO to make just 30.5% of their three-pointers (23rd in the nation), 31.2% of their mid-range shots (sixth), 51.6% of their near-proximity attempts (12th), and 37.3% of their total shots from the field (second). Michigan is also a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 18.06 vs. AO, they are currently rated sixth in the country in that category. Michigan lastly does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.0% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 11th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 10.69, they're 49th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. If Michigan does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 87.30 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 16th-worst in college basketball.
The frightening part is that Michigan is almost as dominant on the offensive end of the floor as they are on the defensive end of it. The team ranks seventh nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 116 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Michigan is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They convert 40.2% of their three-pointers (second in the nation), 66.5% of their near-proximity attempts (11th), and 50.6% of their total shots from the field (fourth) vs. AO. Michigan is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.1% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 19th nationally in free throw percentage.
Michigan has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 330th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most. When playing on the road, Michigan performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 310th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that favor a faster tempo, Michigan often performs worse than normal. Michigan is more efficient than usual 13% of the time when facing teams that have a pace vs. AO greater than 71.01. In their other contests, Michigan performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
Michigan does better vs. clubs that do a nice job converting inside the paint. When playing squads that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.77%, Michigan performs above average 70% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 13% of the time.
Michigan performs worse against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.09%, Michigan is more efficient than normal 33% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 77% of the time.
