ANALYSIS: Despite their unexceptional win percentage, Michigan should be regarded as one of the better teams in college hoops. They have a record of 19-12 and are ranked 13th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.9). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.769 (which ranks sixth nationally), Michigan is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Michigan is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked 16th in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 90 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Michigan is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 19.94 vs. AO, they are currently rated 20th in the country in that category. Michigan has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 43rd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.0% of their attempts from close-up.
Michigan plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 18th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Michigan allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 7.55, which ranks #7 in the country. Michigan is also an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They are most proficient from two-point range, making good on 40.6% of their mid-range jumpers (42nd in the nation), 67.2% of their near-proximity chances (eighth), and 47.8% of their total shots from the field (12th) vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
