ANALYSIS: This website places Michigan State in the top 25% of all NCAA college basketball teams this year. They have a record of 23-13 and are ranked 49th overall (out of 358) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 53.9), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.740 (the fifth-highest in the country), Michigan State has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
The primary strength for Michigan State this year is offense. The team is ranked 31st in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 111 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Michigan State is an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They convert 38.3% of their three-pointers (eighth in the nation), 64.1% of their near-proximity attempts (44th), and 47.5% of their total shots from the field (25th) vs. AO. Michigan State also favors the mid-range jumper over any of the others. The club is ranked 46th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts.
Michigan State is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 86th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 97 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Michigan State is one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.5% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 33rd in the NCAA), and with a rating of 11.13, they're 50th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Michigan State has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 46th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 54.3% of their attempts from close-up.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
