ANALYSIS: Auburn has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. They have a record of 25-6 and are ranked 37th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #4 team (out of 14) in the SEC (average ranking 66.1).
Auburn succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 40th in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Auburn does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 34.18 vs. AO, they are ranked first in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 65.8% of their attempts. Auburn also appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 17.44 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 14th in the NCAA), and they convert 7.0% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 27th) as well.
Auburn plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 61st nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 93 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Auburn will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 31.7% of their mid-range jumpers (13th in the nation), 52.7% of their near-proximity chances (24th), and 39.6% of their total shots from the field (27th). Auburn also does a fairly satisfactory job to deny opponents chances to score off of the offensive glass. They have a rating of 11.08 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 52nd in the country).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Auburn performs worse against squads that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.65, Auburn is more efficient than normal 23% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 78% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Auburn usually performs better than average. Auburn is more efficient than normal 63% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.65. In all other contests, Auburn performs better than average 13% of the time.
Auburn is typically worse vs. teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.26%, Auburn performs above their norm 24% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 70% of the time.
