ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Auburn should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. They have a record of 15-20 and are ranked 135th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #12 team (out of 14) in the SEC (average ranking 68.6).
Auburn will likely rely on their offense more than anything else to win games. The team is ranked 132nd in offensive efficiency and scores more than 101 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Auburn does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 37.54 vs. AO, they are ranked second in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 66.3% of their attempts. Auburn also makes an effort to get off shots from the inside more so than the perimeter. The ball-club is 55th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. Curiously enough, though they shoot a fair amount of field goals from the inside, they don't really make a whole bunch of them, converting only 55.3% of their near-proximity attempts vs. AO. If Auburn does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 77.51 vs. AO, which ranks 28th-worst in college basketball.
Auburn plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 156th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Auburn does a really good job to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 36th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 78.06 vs. AO. Auburn also does a fairly satisfactory job to deny opponents chances to score off of the offensive glass. They have a rating of 13.75 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 65th in the country).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Auburn is typically better vs. teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. Against foes that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 54.18%, Auburn performs above their norm 61% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
When facing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Auburn often performs worse than normal. Auburn is more efficient than usual 27% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 16.95. In their other contests, Auburn performs better than the norm 61% of the time.
Auburn does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.63, Auburn performs above average 39% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 73% of the time.
