ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Maryland is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 83rd overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 15-17. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 53.9), they're currently ranked as our #11 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.711 (the 16th-highest in the country), Maryland has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
The primary strength for Maryland this year is offense. The team is ranked 55th in efficiency on that end of the floor, and they'll rack up more than 108 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Maryland does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 14th nationally). Maryland also does a really good job converting from the free throw line. Making 76.5% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 31st nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-50 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 28.82 vs. AO.
Maryland is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 114th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 98 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Maryland does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.89 vs. AO, they are currently rated 40th in the country in that category. Maryland also does an adequate job to prevent opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 52nd in the NCAA).
Maryland has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #39 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
