ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Maryland is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. They are ranked #45 (out of 357) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 17-14. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 44.1), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
Maryland has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #32 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings and embracing a more deliberate, half-court style of play (the 22nd-slowest pace in D1), they will score about 110 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Maryland is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. While hitting from inside is their primary strength (67.7% from near-proximity vs. AO, eighth in the country), the team also converts 37.1% of their three-pointers (44th), 43.4% of their mid-range jumpers (32nd), and 48.7% of their total shots from the field (18th) vs. AO. Maryland also lives and dies by the three-ball and will launch from long-distance early and often. The team ranks 21st in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts.
Maryland plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 66th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 94 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Maryland does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked third in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 30.1% of their attempts from that distance. Maryland is also one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #21 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 39.4% of their total attempts from the floor. If Maryland does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 85.86 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 36th-worst in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, Maryland usually performs worse than average. Maryland is more efficient than normal 15% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.75%. In all other contests, Maryland performs better than average 82% of the time.
Maryland is typically worse vs. teams that are typically efficient on offense. Against foes that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 110.88, Maryland performs above their norm 11% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 71% of the time.
When facing teams that allow more chances at the line, Maryland often performs better than normal. Maryland is more efficient than usual 90% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.89. In their other contests, Maryland performs better than the norm 35% of the time.
