ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Harvard is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. They are ranked #234 (out of 358) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 13-13. Of the eight schools in the Ivy League (average ranking 211.5), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, Harvard will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 101 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #176 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Harvard has extremely pesky defenders that ceaselessly attempt to deny opponents ample opportunity to shoot. The club is ranked 22nd in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 79.38 vs. AO. If Harvard does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's inability to stop opponents from sinking threes. AO will convert 36.1% of their three-point attempts, and the team ranks 41st-worst in that category because of it.
The offense for Harvard, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 287th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 95 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Harvard has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 65.5% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #343 overall in free throw percentage. Harvard also does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.05 vs. AO, they are 342nd in the overall rankings for that category.
Harvard is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 38th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. When playing on the road, Harvard has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 15th in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Harvard usually performs worse than average. Harvard is more efficient than normal 30% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.37%. In all other contests, Harvard performs better than average 69% of the time.
Harvard is typically worse vs. teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. Against foes that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.00%, Harvard performs above their norm 30% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 69% of the time.
When facing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Harvard often performs worse than normal. Harvard is more efficient than usual 40% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.80. In their other contests, Harvard performs better than the norm 75% of the time.
Plenty of New England flavor in conference Rookie of the Year races (2/18/2022 5:16:31 PM) Harvard's Harmoni Turner, Boston College’s Maria Gakdeng, Boston University’s Alex Giannaros, and Northeastern’s Claudia Soriano are all putting together debut seasons worthy of postseason recognition.
