ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Holy Cross is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. Carrying a record of 5-11, they are currently rated #227 overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of 10) in the Patriot League (average ranking 212.8).
Though their defense is far from abysmal, Holy Cross is not really proficient on that end of the court either. Allowing about 104 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they are ranked #253 in defensive efficiency. Holy Cross fouls far too much and sends the opposition to the line way too often. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 30.87 vs. AO, the squad is ranked #348 in the country in that category. Holy Cross also performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 335th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 44.2% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. If Holy Cross does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from converting from locations near the basket. AO will convert just 53.9% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 40th-best in the country in that category as a result.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Holy Cross still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #194 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Holy Cross tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 15.41, which ranks seventh from the bottom in D1. Holy Cross also struggles to draw fouls and earn opportunities at the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 20.74 vs. AO, they are 325th in the overall rankings for that category. If Holy Cross does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to sink threes. The squad converts 38.4% of their three-point attempts vs. AO, which ranks 16th in the nation.
Holy Cross has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #31 ranking in positive momentum. On the road, Holy Cross performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 40th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
