ANALYSIS: Boston U is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Carrying a record of 16-16, they are currently rated #311 overall (out of 364) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the Patriot League (average ranking 285.9), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.236 (which ranks fifth from the bottom nationally), Boston U has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to Boston U. The team is ranked 319th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Boston U will have a really tough time winning games when taking into consideration their shooting percentage near the basket. The team is ranked 354th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 51.2% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 41.0% of their total attempts vs. AO. Boston U also does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 4.0% of all second-chance opportunities (340th nationally), and with a rating of 11.31, they're 325th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. If Boston U does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 42.2% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks 35th in the NCAA.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Boston U still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 113 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #267 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Boston U performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked 351st nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 43.5% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Boston U also does a pretty inadequate job to provide chances for themselves to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #325 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 9.16 vs. AO.
When playing on the road, Boston U performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 330th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Boston U performs worse against squads that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.79%, Boston U is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 81% of the time.
When playing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Boston U usually performs worse than average. Boston U is more efficient than normal 41% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.95%. In all other contests, Boston U performs better than average 89% of the time.
Boston U is typically worse vs. teams that effectively clean the offensive glass. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 10.74, Boston U performs above their norm 41% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 89% of the time.
