ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Indiana has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. Ranked 34th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 20-12. They are also ranked by this site as the #12 team (out of 14) in the Big Ten (average ranking 36.9). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.748 (which ranks 14th nationally), Indiana is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
The primary strength for Indiana is defense. The team is ranked 31st in efficiency, allowing fewer than 91 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Indiana has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 37th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.2% of their attempts from that distance. Indiana also boasts one of the better overall defensive field goal percentages in the country. The team ranks #48 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.4% of their total attempts from the floor.
Indiana plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 48th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 107 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Indiana does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 32.13 vs. AO, they are ranked sixth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 67.7% of their attempts. Indiana also appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 17.47 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked 13th in the NCAA), and they convert 7.5% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 15th) as well.
On the road, Indiana performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 336th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Indiana does better vs. clubs that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When playing squads that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 9.59, Indiana performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 29% of the time.
Indiana performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.17%, Indiana is more efficient than normal 68% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 20% of the time.
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Indiana usually performs better than average. Indiana is more efficient than normal 72% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 89.50. In all other contests, Indiana performs better than average 29% of the time.

Indiana survives and advances against Minnesota (3/4/2020 11:10:00 PM) BLOOMINGTON – Indiana did its best Bachman Turner Overdrive impression tonight: the Hoosiers took care of business. Indiana's 72-67 win over Minnesota was the type of result that won't help the Hoosiers much on Selection Sunday, but a loss tonight would have been devastating. Indiana needs two wins this week to likely lock up an NCAA ...
Hoosiers Sweep Gopher Men 72-67 (3/4/2020 10:26:00 PM) His hard work eventually paid off.
