ANALYSIS: Northwestern is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 95th overall (out of 357) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 9-15. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 44.1), they're currently ranked as our #13 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.800 (which ranks 17th nationally), Northwestern is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Northwestern will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 42nd in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 93 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Northwestern has had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #52 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 40.8% of their total attempts from the floor. Northwestern also does a fairly satisfactory job to deny opponents chances to score off of the offensive glass. They have a rating of 10.96 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 64th in the country).
Northwestern is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 138th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Northwestern is one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 19th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 65.9% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. However, even with their high conversion rate on near-proximity attempts, this team usually settles for shots from longer distances. Only about 29.0% of their total attempts vs. AO are from the inside. Northwestern also does fairly solid work converting shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 59th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 41.6% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. If Northwestern does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 9.76 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 40th-worst in college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Northwestern does worse vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 83.61, Northwestern performs above average 20% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 77% of the time.
Northwestern performs better against squads that allow more chances at the line. When facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.07, Northwestern is more efficient than normal 80% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 31% of the time.
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Northwestern usually performs better than average. Northwestern is more efficient than normal 71% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 92.64. In all other contests, Northwestern performs better than average 22% of the time.
