ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Northwestern is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Carrying a record of 13-19, they are currently rated #75 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 14 schools in the Big Ten (average ranking 37.8), they're currently ranked as our #13 team in the conference.
The Northwestern defense will be extremely problematic for most opposing offenses. Allowing about 94 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the club is ranked 23rd overall in defensive efficiency. Northwestern will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They allow AO to convert only 29.2% of their three-pointers (sixth in the nation), 54.3% of their near-proximity attempts (37th), and 40.7% of their total shots from the field (42nd). Northwestern also does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 10.39 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked ninth in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 4.1% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 12th) as well.
Though they're not quite as efficient offensively as they are defensively, Northwestern still does OK when they have possession of the ball. The team ranks 171st nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Northwestern does a pretty decent job in most cases to maximize opportunities to score on offense. The team is ranked 63rd in the NCAA in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 86.14 vs. AO. As far as making those field goal attempts goes, the team is somewhat middle-of-the-road, converting about 42.2% of them vs. AO. Northwestern also converts a fair amount of its free throws. Making 74.5% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 68th nationally in free throw percentage. If Northwestern does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 11.19 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 50th-worst in college hoops.
On the road, Northwestern performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked seventh from the bottom in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Northwestern is typically better vs. teams that do not defend well on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.39%, Northwestern performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 27% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Northwestern often performs worse than normal. Northwestern is more efficient than usual 27% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 28.38. In their other contests, Northwestern performs better than the norm 67% of the time.
Northwestern does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.66%, Northwestern performs above average 41% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 80% of the time.
