ANALYSIS: Boise State has been extremely effective at times this year and should be regarded as a serious opponent. Ranked 53rd overall (out of 364) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 26-11. They are also ranked by this site as the #3 team (out of 11) in the MWC (average ranking 125.0).
Boise State succeeds primarily through their offense. They are ranked 31st in offensive efficiency and score in excess of 119 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Boise State allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.41, which ranks #5 in the country. Boise State is also deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 78.8% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 14th nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-50 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 31.80 vs. AO. Boise State is lastly one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 22nd in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 65.5% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. The team will attempt a fair amount of field goals from up-close, too. Approximately 39.3% of their attempts vs. AO are taken from near-proximity locations, which puts the team in the top-100 in that category nationally.
Boise State plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 76th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 102 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Boise State does a super job to deny opponents offensive rebounds and second chances. They have a rating of 10.42 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked fourth in the country), and they allow AO to convert just 4.2% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 17th) as well. Boise State has also been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 28th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.4% of their attempts from that distance. If Boise State does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's inability to stop opponents from sinking threes. AO will convert 36.7% of their three-point attempts, and the team ranks 49th-worst in that category because of it.
On the road, Boise State performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 350th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Boise State is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from outside the arc. Against foes that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.38%, Boise State performs above their norm 42% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 75% of the time.
