ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, Iowa State is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Ranked 156th overall (out of 357) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 2-22. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the Big 12 (average ranking 59.9). Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.791 (the 24th-highest in the country), Iowa State has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
If there is a strength for Iowa State this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 158th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 100 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Iowa State has done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 37th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.9% of their attempts from afar. Iowa State will also look to secure a relatively healthy number of easy scoring opportunities off of steals. They're ranked 51st in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.68. If Iowa State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's difficulties stopping opponents from converting from the inside. AO will convert 65.2% of their near-proximity field goal attempts, and the team ranks 23rd-worst in that category as a result.
Iowa State plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 169th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 99 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Iowa State is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 77.6% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked 23rd nationally in free throw percentage. Though they typically convert their shots from the line, the downside is that they hardly ever manage to get there. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 19.05 vs. AO (seventh-worst in the nation). Iowa State also favors the mid-range jumper over any of the others. The club is ranked 38th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-100 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 40.5% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO. If Iowa State does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's penchant for allowing too many easy buckets off of giveaways. The squad has a rating of 14.09 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of steals, which ranks 31st-worst in the college game.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Iowa State is typically better vs. teams that shoot the ball well from the field. Against foes that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.48%, Iowa State performs above their norm 79% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 20% of the time.
When facing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, Iowa State often performs better than normal. Iowa State is more efficient than usual 73% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.19%. In their other contests, Iowa State performs better than the norm 22% of the time.
Iowa State does better vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.42%, Iowa State performs above average 88% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 38% of the time.
