ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Hawaii should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 20-14, and the club is ranked 164th overall (out of 362) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 11 schools in the Big West (average ranking 193.5), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Hawaii this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 162nd in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 105 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hawaii will likely shoot a fair share of three-pointers each contest. The team ranks 83rd in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. When it comes to actually making their three-point attempts, the squad shoots a so-so 33.7% from beyond the arc vs. AO. If Hawaii does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 82.33 vs. AO, which ranks 45th-worst in college basketball.
Hawaii plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 175th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 106 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Hawaii does a fairly satisfactory job to deny opponents chances to score off of the offensive glass. They have a rating of 12.08 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (ranked 73rd in the country). If Hawaii does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.01 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks tenth-worst in the college game.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, Hawaii often performs worse than normal. Hawaii is more efficient than usual 25% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.59%. In their other contests, Hawaii performs better than the norm 75% of the time.
Hawaii does worse vs. clubs that shoot the ball well from the field. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.23%, Hawaii performs above average 32% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 77% of the time.
Hawaii performs worse against squads that are typically efficient on offense. When facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 103.79, Hawaii is more efficient than normal 25% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 65% of the time.
