ANALYSIS: When you talk about the elite teams in college basketball this year, Florida most definitely is in the conversation. Ranked third overall (out of 364) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 35-4. Of the 16 schools in the SEC (average ranking 32.0), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.747 (which ranks 22nd nationally), Florida is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Florida showcases one of the country's most efficient offenses. Racking up about 130 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, the team is nationally rated second in efficiency on that end of the floor. Florida is a very dangerous team when it comes to shooting the rock, ranking in the top-25 in three of our four major field goal categories. They convert 38.9% of their three-pointers (13th in the nation), 68.2% of their near-proximity attempts (fourth), and 50.1% of their total shots from the field (seventh) vs. AO. Florida also does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 33.50 vs. AO, they are ranked 11th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 72.8%.
The frightening part is that Florida is nearly as dominant on the defensive end of the floor as they are on the offensive side of things. The team ranks seventh nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 92 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Florida will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. Defending the long-ball is their strength (allowing 28.1% shooting from three vs. AO, fourth-best in the nation), but the team also harasses AO into converting just 50.5% of their near-proximity attempts (ninth), 32.5% of their mid-range chances (31st), and 37.4% of their total shots from the field (sixth). Florida also does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.3% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 23rd in the NCAA).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that favor a faster tempo, Florida usually performs better than average. Florida is more efficient than normal 61% of the time when facing clubs that have a pace vs. AO greater than 66.69. In all other contests, Florida performs better than average 25% of the time.
Florida is typically better vs. teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot. Against foes that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.68%, Florida performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
