ANALYSIS: Despite their unexceptional win percentage, Florida should be regarded as one of the better teams in college hoops. They have a record of 16-17 and are ranked 27th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 14 schools in the SEC (average ranking 68.6), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.741 (which ranks fifth nationally), Florida is one of the more battle-tested teams in the college game.
Florida is one of the most menacing defensive teams in the country. Ranked 12th in defensive efficiency, they will allow fewer than 90 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Florida does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 18th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 12.52, they're 23rd in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Florida is also one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #24 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 38.9% of their total attempts from the floor.
Florida is also a fairly decent team on the offensive end of the court. The team ranks 83rd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 105 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Florida allows very few breakaway opportunities for the opposition, which typically translates to fewer turnovers. The team's rating vs. AO for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals is 8.75, which ranks #21 in the country. Florida also boasts one of the better offensive field goal percentages in the college game. The squad is ranked 35th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 46.6% of their attempts vs. AO. If Florida does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's poor shooting at the line. The squad makes just 63.1% of their free throw attempts, which ranks 19th-worst in Division I.
When playing on the road, Florida performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 310th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Florida does better vs. clubs that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When playing squads that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 56.74%, Florida performs above average 100% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
Florida performs better against squads that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.12%, Florida is more efficient than normal 90% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 26% of the time.
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, Florida usually performs worse than average. Florida is more efficient than normal 21% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.95%. In all other contests, Florida performs better than average 79% of the time.
