ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Florida State is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Carrying a record of 17-15, they are currently rated #91 overall (out of 364) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 18 schools in the ACC (average ranking 88.6), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference.
Florida State will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 81st in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Florida State will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 30.2% of their mid-range jumpers (tenth in the nation), 54.4% of their near-proximity chances (44th), and 40.5% of their total shots from the field (45th).
Florida State plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 125th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 110 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Florida State does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 32.88 vs. AO, they are ranked 19th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 71.9%. Florida State is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 7.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 47th nationally).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Florida State usually performs better than average. Florida State is more efficient than normal 74% of the time when facing clubs that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.14. In all other contests, Florida State performs better than average 23% of the time.
Florida State is typically better vs. teams that tend to allow more shots on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.05, Florida State performs above their norm 82% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 38% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Florida State often performs better than normal. Florida State is more efficient than usual 67% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.32. In their other contests, Florida State performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
