ANALYSIS: Florida State is a top-25 caliber squad that should be able to remain competitive with most, if not all, teams in the country. They have a record of 18-7 and are ranked 22nd overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 15) in the ACC (average ranking 76.8).
Florida State is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated 22nd in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 111 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Florida State does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 9.5% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked third nationally). Florida State is also an excellent shooting team, capable of converting from multiple locations on the court and ranking in the top-50 in three of our four primary field goal categories. They convert 37.7% of their three-pointers (26th in the nation), 65.6% of their near-proximity attempts (22nd), and 49.6% of their total shots from the field (tenth) vs. AO.
Florida State plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 32nd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 92 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Florida State will put a good dent in the shooting percentages of several opponents, considering the team ranks in the top-50 in each of the four major defensive shooting categories. While their best work on defense is done near the bucket (allowing 49.0% shooting from near-proximity locations vs. AO, second-best in the nation), the team also pesters AO into converting just 30.6% of their three-pointers (27th), 33.7% of their mid-range field goals (36th), and 37.6% of their total shots from the field (third). Florida State will also look to secure a relatively healthy number of easy scoring opportunities off of steals. They're ranked 62nd in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.27.
When playing on the road, Florida State performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 320th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Florida State performs worse against squads that effectively clean the offensive glass. When facing teams that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 13.03, Florida State is more efficient than normal 11% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 56% of the time.
When playing teams that allow more chances at the line, Florida State usually performs worse than average. Florida State is more efficient than normal 13% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 23.10. In all other contests, Florida State performs better than average 53% of the time.
Florida State is typically better vs. teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint. Against foes that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 61.24%, Florida State performs above their norm 57% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 18% of the time.
