ANALYSIS: Not one of the better ball-clubs in college basketball, Howard should be a fairly easy win for most capable opponents. Haslametrics has them ranked 334th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 12-20. They are also ranked by this site as the #10 team (out of 13) in the MEAC (average ranking 312.4). With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.288 (which ranks seventh from the bottom in the nation), Howard has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Howard has one of the most anemic offenses around. They rank 335th in efficiency on that end of the court and score fewer than 89 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Howard is downright awful shooting the basketball and can't hit from anywhere, shamefully ranking in the bottom-25 in each of the four major field goal shooting categories. They make just 28.0% of their three-pointers (ranking third from the bottom nationally), 31.2% of their mid-range attempts (328th), 51.7% of their near-proximity chances (329th), and 38.0% of their total shots from the field (341st) vs. AO. Howard also tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 13.51, which ranks 336th in D1. If Howard does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 33.99 vs. AO, which ranks 13th in the country.
Howard doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 109 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #298 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Howard can be weak on rebounding, giving the opposition too many chances to score off of the offensive glass. The club has a rating of 17.57 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (309th nationally).
Howard is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 30th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Howard is typically worse vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 68.76%, Howard performs above their norm 33% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 72% of the time.
When facing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Howard often performs better than normal. Howard is more efficient than usual 80% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 11.68. In their other contests, Howard performs better than the norm 45% of the time.
Howard does better vs. clubs that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds. When playing squads that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.81%, Howard performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 45% of the time.
