ANALYSIS: Albany is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Ranked 285th overall (out of 353) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 12-20. Of the nine schools in the America East (average ranking 250.6), they're currently ranked as our #6 team in the conference.
Albany is not one of the most productive teams on offense. Scoring fewer than 97 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are rated at #280 in offensive efficiency. Albany struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They are worse off shooting inside the three-point stripe, making good on just 32.1% of their mid-range jumpers (314th in the nation), 52.8% of their near-proximity chances (331st), and 39.9% of their total shots from the field (327th) vs. AO. Albany also has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 13.52, which ranks 304th in D1. If Albany does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's outstanding shooting at the charity stripe. The squad makes 75.5% of their free throw attempts, which ranks #38 in Division I.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Albany still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 107 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #228 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Albany does a very lackluster job preventing opponents from draining threes. They rank 312th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 37.3% of their attempts from afar.
Albany has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #34 ranking in positive momentum. When playing on the road, Albany has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 22nd in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Albany performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.17%, Albany is more efficient than normal 89% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 41% of the time.
When playing teams that convert well from outside the arc, Albany usually performs worse than average. Albany is more efficient than normal 35% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.57%. In all other contests, Albany performs better than average 79% of the time.
Albany is typically better vs. teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.83, Albany performs above their norm 79% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 35% of the time.
