ANALYSIS: UCLA has a fairly solid squad that likely falls within the top quartile of all teams in college basketball this year. Carrying a record of 19-12, they are currently rated #73 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. They are also ranked by this site as the #9 team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 63.8).
UCLA has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #53 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 106 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UCLA does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 31.02 vs. AO, they are ranked 12th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe, where the team shoots a rather mediocre 71.1%. UCLA is also superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 22nd nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 41.6% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. The team will take a fair amount of shots from those in-between locations, too. Approximately 34.1% of their attempts vs. AO are of the mid-range variety, which puts the team in the top-50 in that category nationally.
UCLA is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 109th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 96 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UCLA does a bang-up job preventing the opposition from draining jumpers in between the three-point line and the low post. They're ranked 15th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.4% of their attempts from that distance. UCLA has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 60th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.3% of their attempts from close-up. If UCLA does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's inability to stop opponents from sinking threes. AO will convert 36.7% of their three-point attempts, and the team ranks 30th-worst in that category because of it.
UCLA has been playing some of its most efficient basketball of the season recently and is presently ranked 11th in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, UCLA usually performs better than average. UCLA is more efficient than normal 81% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.76. In all other contests, UCLA performs better than average 11% of the time.
UCLA is typically better vs. teams that convert well from the charity stripe. Against foes that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 0.70%, UCLA performs above their norm 75% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 30% of the time.
When facing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, UCLA often performs better than normal. UCLA is more efficient than usual 90% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.64%. In their other contests, UCLA performs better than the norm 45% of the time.
