ANALYSIS: UCLA is a top-25 caliber squad that should be able to remain competitive with most, if not all, teams in the country. Haslametrics has them ranked 19th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 31-5. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 12) in the Pac-12 (average ranking 97.8).
With a very up-tempo style of play (the 22nd-fastest pace in D1), UCLA is undoubtedly one of the best in the business on offense. The team is rated second in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 121 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UCLA is one of the most lethal teams in the country when it comes to shooting the basketball, ranking in the top-25 in each of our four major field goal categories. They make 41.1% of their three-pointers (sixth in the nation), 45.7% of their mid-range jumpers (first), 71.6% of their near-proximity chances (second), and 52.6% of their total shots from the field (first) vs. AO. UCLA also does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 9.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 15th nationally).
UCLA is also a fairly decent team on the defensive end of the court. The team ranks 90th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 98 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UCLA is a superior unit when it comes to preventing opponents from getting to the foul line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.22 vs. AO, they are currently rated 11th in the country in that category. UCLA also does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked 22nd in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 52.0% of their attempts from close-up. If UCLA does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 87.89 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks third-worst in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, UCLA often performs better than normal. UCLA is more efficient than usual 73% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.12%. In their other contests, UCLA performs better than the norm 36% of the time.
UCLA does better vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.39, UCLA performs above average 62% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 27% of the time.
UCLA performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.99%, UCLA is more efficient than normal 62% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 27% of the time.
