ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Miss. State has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They have a record of 21-13 and are ranked 55th overall (out of 363) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 14) in the SEC (average ranking 72.6).
Miss. State will suffocate most opponents with its stifling defense. Allowing roughly 90 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, this squad is rated #9 in defensive efficiency. Miss. State will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They'll inflict the most harm on the outside, allowing AO to convert just 30.8% of their three-pointers (34th in the nation), 32.9% of their mid-range chances (13th), and 38.8% of their total shots from the field (tenth). Miss. State also does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 31st in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.32.
Though they're not quite as efficient offensively as they are defensively, Miss. State still does OK when they have possession of the ball. The team ranks 153rd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Miss. State appears to be one of the top-notch offensive rebounding teams you will find this year. Against AO, the squad has a rating of 21.06 in potential points scored off of second chances (ranked first in the NCAA), and they convert 8.0% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked ninth) as well. Miss. State also does a really good job to acquire opportunities from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 29.10 vs. AO, they are ranked 36th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, the team struggles mightily from the line, making only 65.0% of their attempts (22nd-worst in the nation). If Miss. State does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's ability (or lack thereof) to sink threes. The squad converts just 28.9% of their three-point attempts vs. AO, which ranks seventh-worst in the nation.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Miss. State performs better against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.21%, Miss. State is more efficient than normal 78% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 13% of the time.
When playing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, Miss. State usually performs better than average. Miss. State is more efficient than normal 79% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.33%. In all other contests, Miss. State performs better than average 25% of the time.
Miss. State is typically better vs. teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. Against foes that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 56.14%, Miss. State performs above their norm 72% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 19% of the time.
