ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Utah State, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. Haslametrics has them ranked 131st overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 18-13. Of the 11 schools in the MWC (average ranking 148.0), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Utah State will likely call on their defense to win a majority of their games. The team is ranked 123rd in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Utah State does an outstanding job shutting down the opposition from behind the arc. They rank 19th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.7% of their attempts from afar. Utah State also does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 24.75 vs. AO, they are currently rated 37th in the country in that category. If Utah State does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's propensity to allow too many shot attempts per trip. The squad has a rating of 88.97 in defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks fourth-worst in college basketball.
Utah State plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 137th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 102 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Utah State is one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked 14th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 39.4% of their attempts from there vs. AO. Utah State has also been fairly successful when shooting from the field. The squad is ranked 55th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 45.8% of their attempts vs. AO. If Utah State does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 11.10 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 15th-worst in college hoops.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Utah State often performs better than normal. Utah State is more efficient than usual 78% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.05%. In their other contests, Utah State performs better than the norm 33% of the time.
Utah State does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 101.80, Utah State performs above average 73% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 32% of the time.
Utah State performs worse against squads that convert well from the charity stripe. When facing teams that have an adjusted free throw percentage vs. AO greater than 66.92%, Utah State is more efficient than normal 32% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
