ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Texas State should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Carrying a record of 21-8, they are currently rated #134 overall (out of 358) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 12 schools in the Sun Belt (average ranking 204.8), they're currently ranked as the best team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Texas State this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 114th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Texas State loves taking the mid-range two, far more so than most other teams. The club is ranked 15th in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-75 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 40.1% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO. Texas State is also one of the more accurate teams in the college game when it comes to shooting the three. They're ranked 32nd nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 37.2% of their attempts from there vs. AO.
Texas State doesn't perform as well defensively as they do offensively. The team is ranked 185th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Texas State does a less-than-adequate job to prevent opponents from scoring off of the offensive glass. The team allows AO to convert 6.1% of all second-chance opportunities (307th nationally).
Texas State is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 32nd in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Texas State usually performs better than average. Texas State is more efficient than normal 100% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 100.29. In all other contests, Texas State performs better than average 38% of the time.
Texas State is typically better vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 43.67%, Texas State performs above their norm 100% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 38% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities, Texas State often performs worse than normal. Texas State is more efficient than usual 22% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 12.12. In their other contests, Texas State performs better than the norm 82% of the time.
