ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Texas State should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Carrying a record of 24-10, they are currently rated #123 overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 12 schools in the Sun Belt (average ranking 171.9), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
The primary strength for Texas State is defense. The team is ranked 75th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Texas State does a really good job to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 31st in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 79.41 vs. AO. Texas State has also done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 35th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.8% of their attempts from afar.
The offense for Texas State, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 194th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 102 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Despite their struggles on offense, Texas State doesn't really stand out as being terrible in any one particular area on that end of the floor. In fact, they aren't even in the bottom-100 in any of the offensive categories we consider for this analysis. If Texas State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to obtain and convert second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad has a second-chance conversion percentage of 7.3% vs. AO, which ranks 43rd in the nation.
Texas State has definitely not been as efficient as of late compared to earlier in the season and, consequently, the team is nationally ranked 334th in positive momentum. Texas State is also one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 27th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm. On the road, Texas State performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 43rd in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Texas State usually performs worse than average. Texas State is more efficient than normal 9% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.05%. In all other contests, Texas State performs better than average 71% of the time.
Texas State is typically better vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.98, Texas State performs above their norm 90% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 32% of the time.
When facing teams that aren't terribly skilled defensively, Texas State often performs better than normal. Texas State is more efficient than usual 83% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 107.19. In their other contests, Texas State performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
