ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Cleveland State should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. They have a record of 9-22 and are ranked 254th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Horizon League (average ranking 204.4), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Cleveland State this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 155th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cleveland State does a really good job to prevent opponents from getting off shots from the field. The club is ranked 37th in Division I in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 77.95 vs. AO. Cleveland State also does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 45th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 12.99.
The offense for Cleveland State, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 303rd in offensive efficiency, scoring about 93 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Cleveland State struggles to drain shots consistently from most spots on the floor, ranking in the bottom-50 in three of the four primary field goal shooting categories. They only convert 31.4% of their three-pointers (318th in the nation), 54.6% of their near-proximity attempts (304th), and 39.7% of their total shots from the field (324th) vs. AO.
On the road, Cleveland State performs noticeably worse than they do at home. The team is currently ranked 328th in the country in the away-from-home metric we track.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
