ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Lafayette likely fits the bill. They are ranked #298 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 10-20. Of the 10 schools in the Patriot League (average ranking 211.8), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
Lafayette does not provide much of a challenge on defense. They are ranked at #318 in efficiency on that end of the court and give up about 112 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Lafayette does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank 336th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 38.7% of their attempts from afar. Luckily, AO will take nowhere near as many threes as they typically would, and only 34.5% of AO's field goal attempts will come from downtown. Lafayette also does a pretty inadequate job to provide chances for themselves to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked #325 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 8.48 vs. AO.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Lafayette still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #252 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Lafayette does an extremely poor job drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of just 19.66 vs. AO, they are 340th in the overall rankings for that category. Lafayette also does a fairly poor job cleaning the offensive glass. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 10.95 in potential points scored off of second chances (313th nationally). If Lafayette does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to sink threes. The squad converts 37.3% of their three-point attempts vs. AO, which ranks 43rd in the nation.
Lafayette has been one of the more erratic teams in NCAA basketball this year (presently ranked 315th in the country in consistency), which makes forecasting the outcomes of their upcoming games tougher than most.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Lafayette performs better against squads that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities. When facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 12.36, Lafayette is more efficient than normal 92% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 44% of the time.
When playing teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds, Lafayette usually performs worse than average. Lafayette is more efficient than normal 36% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.64. In all other contests, Lafayette performs better than average 83% of the time.
Lafayette is typically better vs. teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. Against foes that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.25%, Lafayette performs above their norm 80% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 33% of the time.
