ANALYSIS: Niagara is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 308th overall (out of 353) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 13-19. Of the 11 schools in the MAAC (average ranking 271.7), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.285 (which ranks fifth from the bottom in the nation), Niagara has faced some of the easiest opponents in all of college basketball.
Defense is the farthest thing from a strength for Niagara this year. The team ranks 335th in defensive efficiency, allowing more than 113 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Niagara does an extremely poor job to deny the opposition behind the arc. They rank fourth from the bottom nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 39.8% of their attempts from afar. Niagara also allows the opposition to get off far too many shots from the floor. The team is ranked 341st in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 88.23 vs. AO. Niagara is lastly one of the very worst teams in the country in terms of overall defensive field goal percentage. The ball-club ranks #337 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO will convert approximately 48.3% of their total attempts from the floor. If Niagara does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 22.67 vs. AO, which ranks 41st-best in the country.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Niagara still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #242 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Niagara won't provide opponents much of a scare with their shooting percentage from the inside. The team is ranked 314th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 53.9% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 40.7% of their total attempts vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint, Niagara often performs better than normal. Niagara is more efficient than usual 90% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.52%. In their other contests, Niagara performs better than the norm 32% of the time.
Niagara does worse vs. clubs that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 45.23%, Niagara performs above average 30% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 83% of the time.
Niagara performs worse against squads that allow more chances at the line. When facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 25.88, Niagara is more efficient than normal 30% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 83% of the time.
