ANALYSIS: Maine has a squad that most likely falls somewhere in the bottom half of NCAA Division I teams this year. Ranked 251st overall (out of 362) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 15-17. They are also ranked by this site as the #5 team (out of nine) in the America East (average ranking 236.4).
If there is a strength for Maine this year, it's probably on the defensive end of the court. The team is rated 127th in defensive efficiency, allowing fewer than 103 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Maine does a pretty solid job providing themselves chances to score quickly off of steals. They're ranked 49th in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 14.21.
Unfortunately, Maine is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 319th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 96 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Maine does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 3.3% of all second-chance opportunities (352nd nationally), and with a rating of 9.47, they're 348th in potential points scored off of the offensive boards as well. Maine also won't enter the conversation if you're looking to list the best three-point shooting teams in the country. They are ranked 318th in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 31.2% of their attempts from long vs. AO.
Maine is one of the most consistent teams in NCAA basketball (currently ranked 11th in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their upcoming games far easier to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that effectively clean the offensive glass, Maine usually performs better than average. Maine is more efficient than normal 72% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 10.79. In all other contests, Maine performs better than average 23% of the time.
Maine is typically better vs. teams that allow more chances at the line. Against foes that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.78, Maine performs above their norm 72% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 23% of the time.
When facing teams that do not defend well on the perimeter, Maine often performs better than normal. Maine is more efficient than usual 78% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.39%. In their other contests, Maine performs better than the norm 41% of the time.
