ANALYSIS: Louisiana is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. Ranked 141st overall (out of 351) in our most recent ratings, they presently have a record of 22-14. They are also ranked by this site as the #2 team (out of 11) in the Sun Belt (average ranking 206.9).
Based on the data, Louisiana will likely find more success on offense than on defense. Scoring about 102 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO and utilizing a feverish pace (the eighth-fastest in D1), they currently occupy the #130 slot in the rankings for offensive efficiency. Louisiana does an outstanding job finishing any scoring chances they obtain from offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 9.7% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked fifth nationally), and with a rating of 20.14, they're 13th in potential points scored off of the offensive glass as well. Louisiana will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is tenth in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-100 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 61.5% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO. If Louisiana does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's inability to drain mid-range jumpers. The squad makes just 28.3% of their mid-range field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks fourth-worst in the nation.
Louisiana plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 162nd nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Louisiana has been fairly decent in preventing teams from draining shots from between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 64th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.0% of their attempts from that distance.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Louisiana performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 36.41%, Louisiana is more efficient than normal 65% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 15% of the time.
When playing teams that shoot the ball well from the field, Louisiana usually performs worse than average. Louisiana is more efficient than normal 30% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 40.38%. In all other contests, Louisiana performs better than average 80% of the time.
Louisiana is typically better vs. teams that tend to capitalize off breakaway opportunities. Against foes that have a potential point rate off steals vs. AO greater than 10.76, Louisiana performs above their norm 62% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 17% of the time.
