ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Idaho State is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. They have a record of 13-11 and are ranked 266th overall (out of 357) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 11) in the Big Sky (average ranking 220.3).
Idaho State is not one of the most productive teams on offense. Scoring fewer than 93 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are rated at #291 in offensive efficiency. Idaho State tends to be very careless with the ball and allows far too many breakaway opportunities off of their own turnovers. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 14.24, which ranks 335th in D1. Idaho State is also one of the least accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They are ranked 333rd in three-point field goal percentage nationally and make just 29.8% of their attempts from long vs. AO. Moreover, they find themselves in the bottom-50 in overall offensive field goal percentage, converting just 40.4% of their total attempts vs. AO. If Idaho State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to get to the free throw line. The squad has a free throw attempt rate of 28.12 vs. AO, which ranks 50th in the country.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Idaho State still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 101 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #191 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Idaho State is extremely underskilled to force steals that turn into quick and easy points. They're ranked #349 in potential points off of breakaway steals with a rating of only 6.76 vs. AO. If Idaho State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their ability to prevent opponents from draining shot attempts in between the three-point line and the low post. AO will convert just 32.5% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the team is nationally ranked 13th-best in that category as a result.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Idaho State performs worse against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.65, Idaho State is more efficient than normal 11% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 60% of the time.
When playing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Idaho State usually performs worse than average. Idaho State is more efficient than normal 18% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 95.40. In all other contests, Idaho State performs better than average 63% of the time.
Idaho State is typically better vs. teams that do a nice job converting inside the paint. Against foes that have an offensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 58.04%, Idaho State performs above their norm 56% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 20% of the time.
