ANALYSIS: While not an atrocious team by any means, Idaho State is not exactly one that should appear in many top-100 rankings either. They have a record of 14-16 and are ranked 232nd overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 12) in the Big Sky (average ranking 197.2).
Idaho State will certainly not be one of the stingier defenses opponents will encounter. Allowing more than 107 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked down at #268 in defensive efficiency. Idaho State performs really badly when attempting to stop opponents from making mid-range jumpers. The squad is ranked seventh from the bottom nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 43.5% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Making matters worse, AO will take advantage of that weakness and put up mid-range shots in abundance. Of AO's total field goals, a huge portion of them (34.6%) will be from those in-between locations. Idaho State also struggles on occasion to deny opponents opportunities to shoot from the floor. The team is ranked 307th in the nation in defensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of 85.33 vs. AO.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Idaho State still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 101 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #187 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Idaho State poses no threat whatsoever to grab rebounds off their own misses. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 8.29 in potential points scored off of second chances (third from the bottom nationally), and they convert just 3.7% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked sixth from the bottom) as well. Idaho State also happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked 333rd in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 77.41 vs. AO. If Idaho State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 43.2% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks tenth in the NCAA.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Idaho State performs better against squads that tend to get off more shots. When facing teams that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.35, Idaho State is more efficient than normal 75% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 30% of the time.
When playing teams that are more proficient at draining the mid-range shot, Idaho State usually performs worse than average. Idaho State is more efficient than normal 20% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 39.28%. In all other contests, Idaho State performs better than average 56% of the time.
Idaho State is typically worse vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.30, Idaho State performs above their norm 29% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 64% of the time.
