ANALYSIS: Idaho State is not one of the better teams in Division I this year. Haslametrics has them ranked 323rd overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 5-26. Of the 12 schools in the Big Sky (average ranking 244.5), they're currently ranked as our #10 team in the conference.
Idaho State has one of the most inept defenses in the NCAA. Allowing about 112 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they're ranked way down at #333 in defensive efficiency. Idaho State can be counted on to make some of the inferior shooting teams look pretty capable. The team ranks in the bottom-50 in each of the four major defensive field goal shooting categories. They allow AO to make 39.8% of their three-pointers (15th-worst in the nation), 41.5% of their mid-range jumpers (16th-worst), 65.7% of their near-proximity chances (36th-worst), and 48.2% of their total shots from the field (25th-worst). Idaho State also can be weak on rebounding, giving the opposition too many chances to score off of the offensive glass. The club has a rating of 17.04 vs. AO in potential points allowed off of second chances (325th nationally), and they let AO convert a healthy 8.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 320th) as well.
Idaho State doesn't rate much better on offense than they do on defense. Scoring roughly 94 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #294 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Idaho State happens to be one of the very worst in the game when it comes to maximizing the number of shot attempts they get off from the floor. The team is nationally ranked seventh from the bottom in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 76.77 vs. AO. Idaho State also poses no threat whatsoever to grab rebounds off their own misses. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 9.70 in potential points scored off of second chances (341st nationally).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that tend to get off more shots, Idaho State often performs worse than normal. Idaho State never performs above average when facing teams that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 81.96. In their other contests, Idaho State performs better than the norm 52% of the time.
Idaho State does worse vs. clubs that convert well from outside the arc. When playing squads that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.38%, Idaho State performs above average 8% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 56% of the time.
Idaho State performs worse against squads that are typically efficient on offense. When facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 102.76, Idaho State is more efficient than normal 9% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 53% of the time.
