ANALYSIS: Per this website's calculations, UC Irvine is somewhere between an average to slightly above-average D1 ball-club. Their record this season is 18-9, and the club is ranked 108th overall (out of 357) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #3 team (out of 11) in the Big West (average ranking 193.6).
UC Irvine will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 52nd in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 94 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. UC Irvine is one of the very best in the land in overall defensive field goal percentage. The team ranks #9 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 38.9% of their total attempts from the floor. UC Irvine also does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked tenth in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 51.0% of their attempts from close-up. Because of this, AO takes nowhere near as many inside shots as they typically would -- just 30.1% of AO's field goal attempts will come from short-distance.
Though they're not quite as efficient offensively as they are defensively, UC Irvine still does OK when they have possession of the ball. The team ranks 157th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. UC Irvine loves taking the mid-range two, far more so than most other teams. The club is ranked seventh in ratio of mid-range attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to take that in-between shot, they can certainly make it, too. Currently rated in the top-75 in mid-range shooting percentage, they make roughly 41.2% of their attempts from that distance vs. AO. UC Irvine also does a pretty solid job of scoring points off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 6.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 60th nationally).
When playing on the road, UC Irvine performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 318th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that convert more frequently off of offensive rebounds, UC Irvine usually performs worse than average. UC Irvine is more efficient than normal 13% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.66%. In all other contests, UC Irvine performs better than average 53% of the time.
UC Irvine is typically worse vs. teams that effectively clean the offensive glass. Against foes that have an offensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.30, UC Irvine performs above their norm 18% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 57% of the time.
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, UC Irvine often performs worse than normal. UC Irvine is more efficient than usual 27% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 20.21. In their other contests, UC Irvine performs better than the norm 60% of the time.
