ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Old Dominion should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 19-12, and the club is ranked 117th overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #3 team (out of 14) in Conference USA (average ranking 202.4).
While favoring an extremely deliberate pace (the sixth-slowest in D1), the primary strength for Old Dominion is defense. The team is ranked 46th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 95 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Old Dominion does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.4% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked tenth in the NCAA), and with a rating of 12.60, they're 42nd in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Old Dominion has also been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 28th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 32.5% of their attempts from that distance.
Unfortunately, Old Dominion is not even remotely close to being as good on offense as they are on defense. The team is ranked 250th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 97 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Old Dominion has had serious struggles making their free throws this year. Converting just 64.1% of their attempts, the squad is ranked #329 overall in free throw percentage. If Old Dominion does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully get off shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of 85.87 vs. AO, which ranks #21 in college basketball.
On the road, Old Dominion performs somewhat better than their norm, as the squad is nationally ranked 34th in our away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Old Dominion is typically better vs. teams that find ways to get to the free throw line. Against foes that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 26.86, Old Dominion performs above their norm 69% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 20% of the time.
When facing teams that are typically efficient on offense, Old Dominion often performs better than normal. Old Dominion is more efficient than usual 59% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 96.30. In their other contests, Old Dominion performs better than the norm 11% of the time.
Old Dominion does better vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 6.37%, Old Dominion performs above average 60% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
