ANALYSIS: If you see Indiana State on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. Their record this season is 11-20, and the club is ranked 185th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #8 team (out of 10) in the MVC (average ranking 128.3).
Though their offense is far from the worst in the game, Indiana State is not terribly gifted on that end of the court either. Scoring about 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked at #203 in offensive efficiency. Indiana State does a fairly poor job cleaning the offensive glass. Against AO, the ball-club has a rating of 10.33 in potential points scored off of second chances (325th nationally), and they convert just 3.4% of their second-chance opportunities (ranked 325th) as well. Indiana State is also one of the more inferior teams in the college game when it comes to maximizing opportunities to score on offense. The team is nationally ranked 317th in offensive field goal attempt rate with a rating of only 80.20 vs. AO. If Indiana State does have a strength offensively, it would have to be the team's ability to successfully hit from mid-range locations on the court. The team makes 45.0% of their in-between field goal attempts vs. AO, which ranks fifth in the NCAA.
Indiana State doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 102 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #202 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Indiana State tends to struggle a bit against teams that shoot the three. They rank 298th nationally in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make 36.1% of their attempts from afar. If Indiana State does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success stopping opponents from earning second-chance opportunities via offensive boards. The team has a rating of 10.26 in potential points allowed off of second chances vs. AO, which ranks 25th-best in college hoops.
Indiana State has been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked 339th overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that have trouble defending the mid-range shot, Indiana State often performs worse than normal. Indiana State is more efficient than usual 15% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.88%. In their other contests, Indiana State performs better than the norm 75% of the time.
Indiana State does worse vs. clubs that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. When playing squads that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 41.97%, Indiana State performs above average 11% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 70% of the time.
Indiana State performs worse against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 103.46, Indiana State never performs above average. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 45% of the time.
