ANALYSIS: They may not cause sleepless nights for opponents, but Indiana State, as a slightly above-average team, cannot be totally ignored. They are ranked #130 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 18-12. Of the 10 schools in the MVC (average ranking 153.2), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Indiana State this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 120th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Indiana State is one of the most accurate teams when shooting from long-distance. They're ranked 20th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and make about 37.2% of their attempts from there vs. AO. Though they convert many of their threes, the team doesn't really shoot a ton of them. Only 34.6% of their total attempts vs. AO are from long-distance. Indiana State also does fairly solid work converting shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 57th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 39.9% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO.
Indiana State plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 150th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 98 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Indiana State owns a pretty good track record against teams that shoot the three. They rank 65th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 31.3% of their attempts from afar. If Indiana State does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's troubles stopping opponents from converting mid-range jumpers. AO will make good on 40.6% of their mid-range field goal attempts, and the squad ranks 50th-worst in that category because of it.
When playing on the road, Indiana State performs somewhat worse than they normally do on their home court. The club is nationally ranked 325th in our site's away-from-home metric.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Indiana State does better vs. clubs that find ways to get to the free throw line. When playing squads that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.27, Indiana State performs above average 77% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
Indiana State performs worse against squads that do not defend well on the perimeter. When facing teams that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 32.05%, Indiana State is more efficient than normal 39% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
