ANALYSIS: They're far from the worst of the worst, but Indiana State should not be a terribly frightening opponent for most clubs. Carrying a record of 11-20, they are currently rated #198 overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage this season. Of the 10 schools in the MVC (average ranking 146.9), they're currently ranked as our #8 team in the conference.
Based on their performances this year, Indiana State will likely find more success on defense than they will on offense. Allowing about 100 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO, they currently occupy the #118 slot in the ratings for defensive efficiency. Indiana State has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 46th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 33.1% of their attempts from that distance. To capitalize on that weakness, this team will make AO shoot from mid-range locations more than they usually would. Of AO's total field goals, a large portion of them (33.1%) will be from mid-range. Indiana State has also been pretty good preventing teams from hitting shots in the paint. They are ranked 64th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 55.9% of their attempts from close-up. If Indiana State does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's tendency to send opponents to the line too much by fouling. The squad has a rating of 31.93 in defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks 33rd-worst in the country.
The offense for Indiana State, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient as the defense is. The team is ranked 264th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 96 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Indiana State does a terrible job to take advantage of scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team converts only 4.6% of all second-chance opportunities (327th nationally).
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass, Indiana State usually performs worse than average. Indiana State is more efficient than normal 22% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.19%. In all other contests, Indiana State performs better than average 76% of the time.
Indiana State is typically worse vs. teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field. Against foes that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 44.82%, Indiana State performs above their norm 30% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 75% of the time.
When facing teams that tend to get off more shots, Indiana State often performs worse than normal. Indiana State is more efficient than usual 48% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 79.45. In their other contests, Indiana State performs better than the norm 89% of the time.
